The Marriage Covenant The Oklahoma Marriage Covenant is a document created and mutually agreed upon by the heads of the major denominations in Oklahoma. The covenant asks pastors or those licensed to marry to request a time period between engagement and marriage in which to allow the pastor to facilitate marriage preparation courses. Throughout this time period, the pastor will not only focus on preparing the couple for marriage but also encourage the spiritual formation of the couple as well. The covenant also provides that the pastor will facilitate the development of a mentoring relationship with other couples within their congregation. One of the gifts a pastor can bestow on the couples he or she marries is knowledge about the steps they are taking in their growth as a couple. The first few years of marriage are a time of transition and can be the most satisfying when a couple is adequately prepared for the many things they may experience. The early years of a marriage also can be the most trying for those who are not prepared. Pastors have a unique position in promoting marriage education through their churches as many couples rely on their pastor to guide them successfully to the altar. We encourage you to become a partner with the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative by pledging to provide couples with this needed service.
