 Divorce Prevention: Causes of Divorce and How We Can Prevent Divorce There are many reasons why marriages end in divorce, but the exact causes vary for each couple. A study conducted by the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative and Oklahoma State University indicates that some of the major causes of divorce among Oklahomans are a lack of commitment (85%) and too much conflict and arguing (61%). Oklahomans also gave the following other reasons: - Infidelity (58%)
- Marrying too young (43%)
- Little or no helpful premarital preparation (42%)
- Financial problems (41%)
- Domestic Violence (30%)
- Lack of support from family members (29%)
- Religious differences (21%)
In Oklahoma, there are numerous supports to help couples learn divorce prevention skills. The Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP®), is the curriculum used in the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative’s "Forever. For Real." workshops to help couples strengthen their marriages.
